Since 2002, the Kennedy Center and Volkswagen Group of America have teamed up for the VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program, to recognize and showcase the work of emerging young artists living with disabilities, ages 16-25, who are currently residing in the United States. Detour, the 17th exhibition presented as part of the VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, gives 15 young artists the opportunity to display their work in venues across the United States where each artist’s individual talent, mode of expression, and view of the world is showcased and valued.

He is a freshman at an art collage and he aspires to be an art therapist, or child life specialist, to help young people recover from crises, the way he was helped during his many hospital stays. Congratulations Joshua on your $5,000 scholarship award!!

A dog attack when he was 8 altered Joshua Dixon's life forever. But it's how the 18-year-old Portland art school freshman has adapted since that makes him stand out.

At the age of eight, Joshua Dixon was attacked by two pit bulls while he was coming home from school. Fifty-nine surgeries later, Joshua has persevered. He starts art college next week in Maine, and attributes his art talent to the art therapy he received at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep and Comer Children's Hospital, where doctors and nurses are like family.hat's this item about? This week, some of the most talented student artists in the District saw their work displayed at the All-City Visual Arts Senior Portfolio Exhibition. This event was hosted by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and featured drawings, paintings, photography, video, and digital art from 64 high school seniors.
